Metaplasia of Capsular Epithelium of Renal Corpuscle in Mouse and Rat

Abstract
The previous reports showed that the parietal layer of Bowman¢¥s capsule in some renal corpuscle of the adult male mouse is lined by a cuboidal or columnar epithelium. They explaned its expression is dependent upon the presence of male sex hormones.
Authors investigated these renal capsular epithelium among the mouse and rat in both sex. All adult male animals showed positive metaplasia of capsular epithelium into cuboidal or columnar cells in some renal corpuscles. No indication was found in female animals.
Even in the suckling young male mice, such as 1 week, 2 weeks and 3 weeks of ages, metaplasia of capsular epithelium was found in the increasing pattern with postnatal ages. Therefore, presence of testosterone would not make satisfactory explanation for this appearing of columnar cells instead of squamous type in the capsular epithelium of renal corpuscle.
